State-Wide Coastal Coverage
COCMP is creating a state-wide network of instruments to monitor coastal surface currents in real time and provide current forecasting capabilities. When complete, the network will consist of three types of surface current mapping instruments: long-range, standard, and high resolution instruments.

The backbone of the system is an array of long-range surface current mapping instruments (red dots) that provide six kilometer resolution of surface currents along the whole coast and offshore approximately 130 km (gray zone). That resolution is increased to 3 kilometers in highly populated sections of coastline (standard resolution) and 0.3 kilometer in central and northern San Francisco Bay (green zone).

cocmp Ocean currents maps are a product of the Coastal Ocean Currents Monitoring Program (COCMP). The project is funded by the State of California from the California Clean Water, Clean Air, Safe Neighborhood Parks, and Coastal Protection Act of 2002 and the Water Security, Clean Drinking Water, Coastal and Beach Protection Act of 2002.
