The Coastal Ocean Currents Monitoring Program (COCMP) has created a state-wide network of instruments to monitor coastal surface currents in real time and provide current forecasting capabilities.

COCMP has developed real-time surface current maps for CeNCOOS displaying:

  • Average currents for the last hour
  • Average currents for the last 25 hours
  • Likely paths that floating objects would have taken if subjected to the currents measured over the last 24 hours
  • Likely paths that floating objects would take over the upcoming 24 hours based on predicted currents

The Southern Califonia Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS) has developed a Google map product displaying:

  • Surface currents vectors across the region
  • Clickable current arrows with speed and direction
  • 24-hr current time-series graphs
