Google Map Provided by the Southern California Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS)

How to use this map:

  • Select subregion of interest from links on left navigation bar or use map zoom tool.
  • Map arrows in ocean areas depict surface current speed and direction (longer arrows = faster speeds).
  • Arrow colors correspond to current speeds in cm/s (see color bar below map).
  • To find speed and direction of currents at a specific location, click on an arrow.
  • Select from hourly or daily averaged currents map from links on left nav bar.
  • To find currents in the past, use menu below the map to select desired date.
  • Locations of HF Radar stations are shown with colored balloon markers.

Note: To view currents within San Francisco Bay, change resolution to 500m and zoom in

Colorbar for RTV's

Station status is monitored in near real-time.
There is an xml station status file that provides basic metadata for reporting stations.

Tiles are generated at scheduled intervals.
There is an xml tiles status file that provides metadatab about displayed tiles.
