SUMMARY:Ocean Observing In California: Celebrate the Past\, Showcase the Pr
 esent\, Envision the Future - San Diego\, CA\, May 14-16 2024
DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;\n\n[maxbutton id="1" url="https://sccoos.org/conference
 /" text="Visit Meeting Website!" ]\n\n\n\nGOALS AND OBJECTIVES:\n\nCelebra
te\, honor\, and commemorate sustained ocean observing in California - Cal
COFI's 75th anniversary and CeNCOOS and SCCOOS 20th anniversary!\nShare id
eas and latest observations on the state and dynamics of the California Cu
rrent.\nShowcase success stories between scientists and data users.\nBuild
and maintain relationships across the ocean community.\nStimulate meaning
ful coordination that fosters future ocean observing\, sustainable blue ec
onomy initiatives\, and cultivates an equitable ocean community.\n\nMEETIN
G OVERVIEW:\n\nAs the impacts of climate change are experienced across Cal
ifornia\, ocean observations remain a critical mechanism to strengthen com
munity resilience: providing near real-time and forecast information on ch
anging ocean conditions. Sustained observing systems deliver information t
hat helps build an understanding of our changing coasts and oceans to enab
le informed and responsible decision-making and collaborative climate solu
tions.\n\nThe goal of the 2024 joint meeting\, Ocean Observing in Californ
ia: Celebrate the Past\, Showcase the Present\, and Envision the Future\,
is to draw on experiences and expertise from partners and end-users across
all sectors to explore\, honor\, and commemorate the ocean observing comm
unity and the evolving role of ocean observations in support of sustainabl
e resource and place-based management and the development of a sustainable
Blue Economy in California.\n\nWe invite speakers to showcase success sto
ries that highlight effective collaborations between scientists and inform
ation users\; share the latest findings and insights on the California Cur
rent\; present opportunities for collaboration across sectors and discipli
nes\; explore innovative solutions\, technologies\, and approaches in area
s such as ocean solutions\, the Blue Economy\, and equitable service deliv
ery through observing systems\; and discuss efforts to increase diversity
within the ocean community and around the co-design and co-production of k
nowledge for sustainability.\n\nThe evolution of California’s observing
systems encompasses a wide spectrum of technology and information delivery
advancements– from sampling platforms (including uncrewed systems\, aer
osol sampling\, and participatory monitoring) to novel forms of data colle
ction and analysis (such as environmental DNA\, pollutant tracking\, and b
iogeochemical tracers)\; biodiversity sensor technologies (e.g.\, Imaging
 FlowCytobot\, CytoBuoy\, Video Plankton Recorder\, and passive/active acou
stic sensors)\; and data management\, visualization\, utilization and serv
ing of observing data. Submissions that explore the continual diversificat
ion and co-design of ocean observing systems (e.g.\, with local community
members\, Tribes\, and industry partners) are encouraged.\n\nWe seek prese
nters to provide a deeper understanding of the structure\, functioning\, a
nd dynamics of the California Current Ecosystem or provide contrasts to ot
her Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems\, encompassing both biophysical and
human dimensions and explore how to diversify the ocean observing communi
ty\, and co-design solutions to deliver the information and knowledge to a
ddress climate challenges and equip the science and climate adaptation wor
kforce of the future.\n\nWe welcome oral\, poster\, and interactive exhibi
t abstract submissions to participate in our six science sessions (see age
nda at a glance). The meeting will consist of keynotes\, contributed talks
\, panels\, posters\, exhibit booths\, and discussions to celebrate achiev
ements\, share knowledge\, and envision the future of ocean observing. The
meeting and commemoration is co-hosted by the Southern California Coastal
Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS)\, Central and Northern California Ocean O
bserving System (CeNCOOS)\, and the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheri
es Investigations (CalCOFI) with help from our sponsors below.
